Capt (later Maj, MC) G.J. Dean commanded C Sqn 6RTR in 1941. Sgt Jack Hawken remembers: ‘Dean was a superb squadron commander and was a real “hands on” man. Once I was up all night fitting a new water pump to a tank. The Major, when on his very early morning rounds, saw me emerging from the turret and enquired as to what I was doing at such an early hour. When he realised that I had been up all night completely on my own, he hit the roof. Repercussions all round: in the future no fitter was allowed to work on his own day or night there must always be someone on hand to make tea etc.’
